We Make Our Boats The Old Fashioned Way

(Bali, Indonesia) While taking an excursion up a mountain road, we happened upon a boat maker. The primary source of income for the coastal villages of Bali is fishing and the fishermen use only outrigger sailing canoes. Nearly all these fishing boats are hand made dugout canoes. (Times change. Most of the canoes have outboard engines, and we even saw delivery of the first fiberglass boat in the village of Bunutan.)

The fishermen usually go out at 4:00-4:30 in the morning and fish until almost 8:00am. They also go in the afternoon from two until six.

They bring the catch into the village where the women sell it by the roadside. Trucks from the bigger cities travel the coastal road and buy up whatever they think they can sell in the markets and restaurants in the bigger cities.

Each village has a cooperative, and all the catch is combined and the income divided among the fishermen. It evens out the bad days that are inevitable in that particular profession.
